Messenger 6

For all those of you who still use MSN Messenger, they've updated it to version 6, it's a free download from here.

The update includes:

  • Chat with Yahoo! Messenger contacts
  • Add a status message that your personal contacts can see
  • Share what you are listening to in iTunes with your personal contacts
  • Create, send, and receive custom emoticons with personal contacts
  • Send and receive custom animated emoticons with personal contacts
  • Search for conversation histories using Spotlight
  • Check the spelling in your instant messages

Of course, you could always move over to the multi-client messenger
Adium and save the bother or just use good old iChat.

Scrolling Scrolling Scrolling

Here's a handy tip. If you happen to use a standard scroll wheel mouse (none of your fancy Mighty Mice), you can do sideways/horizontal scrolling.

It's very simple, when you want to scroll to the side instead of up and down, just hold down the shift key. Nothing to it!

One More Thing

Apple also announced they would be introducing in 2007 a media streaming box.

It's code-name is
iTV, which they've said will change. I should hope so, calling it iTV would be very confusing in the UK. "What's on ITV? Coronation Street, no Mum, I mean iiiiiTV"

This box will sit under your TV and you'll be able to stream music, film, photos etc to it from your computer wirelessly.

It will be controlled with an updated version of
FrontRow and the Apple remote.

This isn't a recording device, it's purely for streaming media from a computer. So if you want to record TV to your Mac, you'd still need something like eyeTV (yes, another itv to confuse you) from
Elgato.

iPods

Along with the new iTunes, Apple updated the whole range of iPods. No, they've not introduced the widescreen, touchscreen, voice controlled iPod.

First up, the
iPod Shuffle has now shrunk down, reported to be the smallest MP3 player. It's essentially now a handly clip. 1GB £55.

iPod Nano, the form has changed, and looks much more like a thinner version of the mini. Colours make a return too! 2GB (£99) , 4GB (£129) and 8GB (Black-£169) are available. The new advert is quite pretty.

Lastly, the
iPod, which still remains the 5th generation has increased capacity to 80GB. The screen is brighter, has longer battery life. 30GB (£189), 80GB (£259).

You'll also be able to download (at a cost) new games for the iPod, available via the iTunes Store (it's no longer the iTunes Music Store for obvious reasons). The iPod also now has quick search and ability to use the scroll wheel to enter letters, so you can find music more easily.

iTunes 7

Apple released iTunes 7 yesterday, for Mac & PC, and it's quite a significant update. The look has some subtle changes, and I'm thinking this is where Mac OS X 10.5 is headed.

First thing you'll notice is, it's goodbye green iTunes icon and hello blue icon. The last time the icon was blue was version 2. It's also been purple.

It now has a Cover Flow view, which makes flicking through album art very simple, you may have seen this before under the Cover Flow name, but Apple have bought it and tied it right into iTunes, which is much better.

Other features include Gapless playback, a much improved iPod view, sycing both ways with your iPod. There are many other tweaks. Steve Job's also announced a Movie download service in iTunes. Though, just like the TV downloads, neither are available in the UK as of yet.

You'll also need to download
Quicktime 7.1.3. All are available via Software Update, or the links I've given.

Warning: You'll need to remove UNO, if you have it installed. It can cause iTunes 7 to display a memory error. The only way to fix it is to reinstall iTunes.

Also, remove the OSS 3D plugin if you have it installed, it causes iTunes 7 not to play music at all.

iMac's Updated

Yesterday, Wednesday 6th September, Apple updated the entire iMac line and added a new 24" model. They also updated the Mac Mini. Here's the new specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo

The 20" (£999) and new 24" (£1,349.01) both have a 2.16Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, with a build to order option of a 2.33Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo.

The
Mac Mini now sports either a 1.66Ghz (£399.01) or 1.83Ghz (£529) Intel Core Duo (Not the Core 2 Duo). Full Specs here.
